Entertainers mention Kang Ho Dong in their acceptance speeches

Though Kang Ho Dong was not present, many of the celebrities could not ignore his absence at the‘2011 SBS Entertainment Awards’ and desired for him to make his comeback soon.

Kim Yong Man, Kim Won Hee, and Shin Bong Sun hosted the SBS Entertainment Awards that took place on December 30th.

It was here that ‘Running Man‘ Yoo Jae Suk was awarded the honorable ‘Daesang’, and ‘Strong Heart”s Lee Seung Gi and Kim Byung Man of ‘Law of the Jungle‘ were awarded the Best Excellence Awards for Talk Show & Variety Programs. The awards went to various entertainers that were active at SBS for the past year.

However, MC Kang Ho Dong who won the Entertainment ‘Daesang’ last year and served as an MC on hit programs such as ‘Strong Heart’ and ‘Star King‘ until this past September did not receive any awards. In fact, his name was not listed as a nominee for any of them. The MC temporarily retired from the industry after being under suspicion of tax evasion this past September, and was unable to attend any of the year-end ceremonies.

After Kang Ho Dong’s biggest rival Yoo Jae Suk received his SBS Entertainment ‘Daesang’, he cautiously began to say, “I am hesitant to say these words in fear that they will hurt my hyungnim but… I spoke too him not long ago. Towards the end of our conversation he said, “Jaesuk, be strong and march forward.” I really miss you. I will be strong and march forward, just as you said, but I would like to take that journey with you.”

Lee Seung Gi who was award the Talk Show Best Excellence Award as well as the Netizens’ Best Popularity Award also tearfully remarked, “Kang Ho Dong hyungnim, you always made me feel secure by looking closely after me. I never felt burdened because you were there with me, but now your absence feels like a treme9[]ndous void. I really want to hear your hearty laugh. I really want to tell you that I miss you dearly.”

Lee Seung Gi who has been hosting ‘Strong Heart’ alongside Kang Ho Dong for the past two years has been leading the show alone since September.

Cho Hae Ryun who was awarded the Talk Show Excellence Award also stated, “Our Ho Dong who has always cheered us on in the dressing room is taking some time off right now, but next year I hope to lead the programs with him.”

Cho Hae Ryun has helped Kang Ho Dong host ‘Star King’ until he took a temporary leave in September, and Entertainment Boom along with Super Junior‘s Lee Teuk who also worked a lot with the MC on ‘Strong Heart’ and ‘Star King’ also remembered to mention him in their speeches.

Lee Teuk who was also awarded the Talk Show Excellence Award remarked, “Dear Kang Ho Dong sunbaenim who never failed to give brutal advice! The place you belong is not there, but here. Please, hurry back“, and Boom held up a photo of Kang Ho Dong and danced his signature ‘Boom’ dance.

Although Kang Ho Dong was not present, the celebrities missed him at the award ceremony more than they ever have.

Jay Park’s new digital album reaches top of the charts on first day of release

Singer Jay Park released his new album “New Breed: Part 1” online at the stroke of midnight on Dec. 28. Since then, the album has reached the No. 1 spot on various music charts online from Olleh Music to Bugs and Soribada, among others. The album consists of five tracks, and all these songs have made most-downloaded lists online.

The tracks featured on the digital album are “Star,” “Enjoy the Show,” “Up and Down,” “I Got Your Back” and “Not Without You.” The album contains a variety of genres, including R&B, pop, hip-hop and dance, showcasing the versatility of Park’s talent.

Apart from the title song “Star,” the singer is said to have participated in song-writing and musical production for the tracks.

Park will also take to the stage alongside Asian-American group Far East Movement at the “Highlight Festival 2012 Countdown” at the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill in Seoul on Dec. 31. At this event, Park will perform the song “Star” for the very first time.

Far East Movement and Park became acquainted during Park’s childhood in the United States. The band requested that Park perform at the electronic music and dance event.

Secret marriage, lawsuits, rumors: stars make headlines

Singer Seo Tai-ji, left, and actress E Ji-ah shocked the nation with their marriage history. / Korea Times file

By Noh Hyun-gi

For the most, entertainers make us laugh with their talents. But they are often the scrutiny of the limelight themselves, prompting news, sometimes rumors and controversies.

Here are the top entertainment news items that made headlines in 2011.

I. Marriage and divorce of Seo and E Ji-ah

On April 21, Sports Seoul, a local newspaper, revealed that legendary singer Seo Tai-ji, 39, and actress E Ji-ah, 30, were once lawfully married and were filing for a divorce. Specifically, E had filed for alimony and division of property amounting to 5 billion won through a Korean law firm, Barun Law, earlier this year.

According legal sources, the couple got married in 1997 in the United States, shortly after Seo announced his retirement as a singer, disbanding the sensational music group Seo Tai-ji and the Boys. The couple had lived in Atlanta and Arizona.

The news quickly kicked off a controversy as both the singer and the actress had been thought to be single. Particularly, E had recently admitted dating actor Jung Woo-sung.

E dropped the alimony and division of property lawsuit on April 30. Seo released a statement on his official website on the same day explaining their relationship.

After a storm of rumors and news, E came back to the small screen for MBC drama “Me Too, Flower!” to play a police officer in November.

II. Kang Ho-dong accused of tax evasion

In August, Kang Ho-dong, 41, a popular show host and comedian, was accused of tax evasion. A businessman had informed the authorities that the former “ssireum,” or Korean wrestling, champion hadn’t been paying proper taxes.

Shortly thereafter, Kang announced tentative retirement from the media for having caused controversy. This was a great shock as Kang had been hosting top variety shows like “1 Night, 2 Days,” “Golden Fish-Mureuppak Guru,” and “Star King.”

On Dec. 18, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor Office announced it would not investigate the alleged tax evasion. It said in order to pursue the case, the National Tax Service (NTS) must issue a complaint. Although the NTS had imposed back taxes and penalties, the agency concluded that it was a simple mistake by Kang’s tax account, not an intentional evasion. Thus, the NTS decided not to refer the case to prosecution.

While much attention is directed towards Kang’s plans on returning to show business, he has not commented on the matter publically.

Kang was not nominated for any year-end awards given by broadcasting agencies, but KBS unexpectedly awarded the entire crew of “1 Night, 2 Days” the KBS Entertainment Grand Prize on Saturday. This caused a stir as only singer-actor and Kang’s co-host, Lee Seung-gi, was initially nominated.

III. Lawmaker vs. comedian

In November, Rep. Kang Yong-seok filed a lawsuit against comedian Choi Hyo-jong for defaming lawmakers. On KBS’s comedy show “Gag Concert,” Choi made sarcastic comments about how easy it was to become a lawmaker.

About campaigning, Choi said “You go to traditional markets you've rarely visited before, shake hands with senior citizens, and eat soup with rice, which you don’t usually eat, at a shabby restaurant.” He continued “You can promise to build a bridge or open a subway station. Is it impossible to keep the promise? Don’t worry, you don’t need to keep it but just say you will.”

Kang called Choi’s remark a collective defamation of the country’s lawmakers and sued him. However, after much criticism about Kang’s overreaction from the public, especially as he was previously found guilty for collectively defaming television announcers with sexist remarks, he dropped the complaint against the comedian.

IV. Han Ye-seul flees while filming

Actress Han Ye-seul, 30, fled the country in the middle of the filming of KBS drama “Spy MyeongWol” in August. She was playing the female lead, Han Myeong-wol, a North Korean squad member. Han reportedly complained about the unbearable working condition with last-minute scripts and demanding shooting schedules.

Initially, she did not show up for shooting on Aug. 14 after a heated conversation with the producer of the show, Hwang In-yeok, on the previous day. Then, on Aug.15, Han flew to Los Angeles where her parents live.

Her absence led to the cancellation of one episode and, instead, a special highlight of the drama was aired. It was the first time for a leading actor to abandon a drama shoot.

The production company of “Spy MyeongWol,” Kim Lee Productions had expressed that it will take legal action against Han. “We’ve accepted her requests to change the script adding more scenes for her and altered the filming schedule to suit her and patiently put up with her frequent late arrivals on the set to continue the drama production,” the statement said. “For the lead actress to abruptly stop working is an irresponsible act that breaks a promise made to viewers and ignores the staff and other actors who work hard despite difficulties,” it said.

Han arrived at the Incheon International Airport on Aug.18 and told reporters that “I did not think things will improve unless I took this measure. I hope this serves as a reminder for people in the industry.”

Han then returned to the drama and continued shooting “Spy MyeongWol.”

V. K-pop stars shines overseas

K-pop stars had a stellar year. The stars enjoyed success pioneering new markets in Europe and the Americas, marking their new status at the forefront of “hallyu,” or the Korean culture wave.

In June, SM Entertainment artists, TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, SHINee and f(x), held the first K-pop concert in Paris. The concert was so well-received that the artists went back for a follow-up show. In November, singers B2ST, 4Minute and G.NA held another concert in the United Kingdom.

K-pop’s popularity at home is not as brilliant as it was overseas. The popularity of “I am a Singer,” a talent competition featuring veteran singers, proved that the home audience has a preference for authenticity over the idol-dominated music scene.

Likewise, audition programs like “Superstar K,” “Star Audition: The Great Birth” and “Survival Audition K-pop Star” attracted many viewers as they search for singers who can actually sing, and are not well-packaged performance dolls.

Lee Ji Ah Enters Hibernation Phase Again After Me Too Flower

Actress Lee Ji Ah is once again entering rest period.

After the end of MBC’s Me Too, Flower with the best rating result of 8.1% since its debut on December 28th, 2011, the lead actress Lee Ji Ah decided to suspend acting activities for a short time to self recharging. It is reported that she has not set any travel or other special plans. After the scandal of marriage and divorce with Seo Taiji exposed in April 2011, she used to stay behind closed door for 7 months. Now, she just returned to the TV series for 3 months, and will re-entering hibernation phase again.

According to source from talent agency, “Lee Ji Ah shot the Me Too, Flower until the afternoon of December 28th, 2011, then she returned to her home after dinner with production team. She didn’t say what she will do next, in the short term should be resting at home.”

It is reported that Lee Ji Ah has not selected her next project. The agency explained, “If there is good project, she is willing to take part in it, but now do not have any plan, nor set any schedule.”

Me Too, Flower is the first project of Lee Ji Ah after the affair of Lee Ji Ah and Seo Tai Ji exposed, that’s why the drama had been in hot discussion even before it started airing. But during the broadcast period, the ratings of the drama consistently stayed at only 5% to 6%, always becoming the program with lowest viewership ratings among all shows broadcast at the same time. Although the ratings did not meet expectations, but Lee Ji Ah does not keep that in mind.

A person related to the agency said, “Lee Ji Ah acted in the drama because she likes the project, so does not feel sad for the ratings. The atmosphere during filming process was very good, so she shot very happily.”

Winners from the 2011 MBC Entertainment Awards

On December 29th, the ‘2011 MBC Entertainment Awards‘ honored this year’s outstanding talents at the MBC Dream Center in Ilsan.

Unfortunately, the awards ceremony met with some difficulties that persisted throughout the show, earning criticism and dissatisfaction from its viewers.

The chain of mistakes began with the hosts, as MC Park Ha Sun stumbled through several speeches. Instead of recovering from her mistakes, she was seen covering her face with her hands, saying, “What do I do” into the mic. Viewers had hoped that Yoon Jong Shin would carry on the show, but he only mumbled and shied away from his usual witticisms.

More than anything, viewers were dissatisfied with the way MBC freely gave out awards, adding in categories that many felt were unnecessary. Most of the awards given out that night were ones that anyone could have won simply for attending.

MBC had also implemented a new system that would award TV shows, not an individual MC or comedian. This change was made largely due to the criticisms they received last year for giving out too many co-awards, which many felt dropped the value and prestige of the award.

Furthermore, MBC came under fire for giving the ‘Program of the Year’ award to the ‘I Am a Singer‘ team.

While many agreed that ‘I Am a Singer’ had created a ripple effect in the industry, they felt that ‘Infinity Challenge‘ was far more deserving of the award.

The show must continue, however, so check out the results below!

Fashion King holds its first script rehearsal

I sincerely hope everybody’s in character at this Fashion King script reading, because man, is that a collection of pissy faces or what? Then again, I’m not sure I want to watch a drama populated by characters wearing pissy faces, even if we’ve got Yoo Ah-in(Sungkyunkwan Scandal) leading the charge.

Let’s just hope the collective cranky comes from holding the drama’s initial rehearsal on Christmas Eve. In attendance, other than Yoo, were Shin Se-kyung (Tree With Deep Roots) in the leading lady role, with hot rising film star Lee Je-hoon as a supporting character. (Seriously? Lee Je-hoon is gonna be huge. He’s taken home five awards so far this year, for his roles in war film The Front Line and the dark indie drama Bleak Night. Other titles on his filmography include Gong Yoo’s rom-com Finding Kim Jong-wook and the queer film Just Friends.) Filling out the main quartet is SNSD member Yuri in her first drama role.

Also at the script read were the rest of the supporting cast of approximately 20 actors, PDLee Myung-woo (What Happened in Bali) in a reunion with his Bali writers Lee Sun-mi(Sweet Spy, Super Rookie) and Kim Ki-ho (Sweet Spy, Invisible Parachute Agent).

Fashion King bears a lot of similarities, description-wise, to the shaky 2009 rom-com Cinderella Man, but it sounds like they’re aiming for a different vibe. Cinderella Man had a birth secret, a chaebol, and a switched-identities plotline, but Fashion King is positioning itself as a “story full of humanity about young people facing the world and dealing with challenge and success, love and ambition, and weathering the ups and downs of their obsession with love and endless ambition.” Gotta love the redundant descriptions, describing redundantly.

The drama is scheduled to follow History of the Salaryman, which premieres on January 2.

[Interview] jay park the all rounder artist?

Scan :

Pic of the interviewer :

Talented artist and cool guy, Jay Park gave us the honor to meet him, answer our questions and leave a message to his French fans.

On a beautiful day in September, my phone rang. On the other line was Jay who made an appointment with me at his company’s studio and after a short taxi ride here I am. There, laying down on a couch a laptop on his knees, Jay greeted me with a bright smile while offering me some pizza. Casual attitude and good mood are the order of the day.

First, can you introduce yourself to our readers who don’t know you?

Hello, my name is Jay Park, I’m a singer, rapper and dancer. I also write my own songs. I love Hip Hop and R&B.

Having grown up in the US wasn't it hard to leave everything and start over in Korea?

Indeed it was really hard. I had never lived in Korea and I knew absolutely nothing about Korean culture or even Korean music. I hesitated a long time but my mother finally pushed me and told me it would be good for my future. The first few months were the hardest because I had never really lived away from my family. I missed them a lot especially my friends that I was used to see everyday. In addition, I didn't know anybody in Korea and the failure to master the language didn't help as well.

We know that dance is a very important part of your life, but how did you walk into the Bboy culture?

I had always loved dancing. I grew up watching Michael Jackson and Usher to name a few. I often watch performance videos and dance videos. I got interested in dancing since I was little. In junior high school, some students from my school were Bboying, so I started with them. Therefore I opened to this environment and its culture, and I fell in love without being able to stop.

You said on twitter that you have made plenty of songs, when will the next album be?

I was just in the studio recording my songs. I've also recorded few others about eight months ago. My album will be out around the end of October or early November. [JPN Note: Interview was done in September before Jay postpone the release of his album]

Can you tell us more about the movie Mr Idol in which we’ll be pleased to see you in? And how was the shooting? Any anecdote?

Mr Idol is my first real film. Although the dance part was easy for me I still had a hard time with the acting part. It was pretty hard because I wasn't at all used to it. I had to try several times to speak in a correct tone and be comfortable. On top of that, having to wait several hours to shoot a scene and then wait again and so on, it’s pretty unsettling but it was nice. Acting is fun and the rest of the cast were really nice to me and helped me a lot. The director was giving me tips as well.

Do you plan to make other movies in the future?

Of course! I’ve received few offers which we are reviewing right now but I’m very interested.
Among Korean artists, is there anyone you are a fan of? Or anyone you are really close to?
I really like Dynamic Duo, Drunken Tiger JK and a lot of others hip hop artists. I also like 2NE1 for their music and also for their stage presence. There is also the group called Secret whom the members and songs are really cute.

I’m closer to people from underground stage, Bboys, rappers (like Dok2) and Boom. Lately, thanks to the show Immortal Song I got closer to G.O from MBLAQ and Kyuhyun from Super Junior.

If you could work with one or more artists of your choice, who will you choose?

I think I would choose Usher. I love his music and he’s a big star. I discovered him when I was in elementary school and ever since then I’m a fan. I once went to his concert and met him backstage after his performance unfortunately he had to leave quickly to go back to work.

We know that one of your dreams is to be known in the US? Do you intend to start as a singer rather than an actor?

I would love to make a movie in Hollywood although currently it seems like a crazy dream. I grew up listening to American music and have been following American artist. I think thanks to the culture I grew up with I could do well in the American entertainment industry. In my opinion, I’ll have more chances to succeed through music rather than acting.

To have such a perfect body, how many hours per day do you work out? You don’t have a little secret exercise to share so I can have the same (body)?

(Laughs). There is no secret. You have to exercise everyday. Don’t train yourself too late at night too because it’s not good for your body. These days with my arm injury, I cannot push too hard on my arm so I run everyday instead.
It’s hard!!!

(Laughs.) Yes it’s hard but you've got to stay motivated. The motivation is the hardest part.

We were able to catch a sight of your tattoos through pictures but exactly how many tattoos do you have? Which one or ones are the most important for you? And why?

I don’t even know. I have so many that I lost count. The most important ones for me, I will say the one on my chest and the ‘Art of Movement’ one. I've to say that Art of Movement is a very important part of me. You know I’m a bboy and it’s my crew. I grew up with them. They are like members of my family. For the one on my chest it represents my real family which of course is also very important for me.

Can you tell us more about your crew Art of Movement and about the relationship that bands you together?

I knew my crew since the beginning of high school. Basically it’s them who brought me into the Bboying world. Thanks to them I stayed motivated just watching their progress and their passion. When I am lucky enough to go on stage to perform I want to share it with my friends. There is Cha Cha, a producer that I work a lot with and Daniel Jerome who is a very talented Hip Hop choreographer and who’s dance often with me. It’s really a very talented crew.

Can you talk about your next projects?

Ohh, I have a lot of projects. After the release of my album I’ve an audition for a new movie. I should also make an Asia tour. Then I have some surprises but you have to be patient.

In addition to handsome, you are a singer, a rapper, a dancer and an actor. All of that with talent. To reassure us, the normal guys, is there anything you can’t do? Or any imperfection?

I know how to do a lot of things but I don’t think that there is one thing I’m very good at. I don’t know how to cook. I used to be a good basketball player but as it’s been a while since I played I think I’ve lost everything. I’m not very good with video games. And Math too. It’s just not my thing. It doesn’t serve me much but I think it’s a good skill to have.

When will we get a fanmeet in France?

You know I would really love to go France. I’ve never been in Europe. I would like to try the food and discover the culture of different countries. Moreover I know that there is a big fanbase in Europe. So if one day there is an opportunity it’ll be a pleasure.

Lastly, can you say something to French Jwalkerz?

Bonjour, thank you very much for your support although we’ve never seen each other before. I would really love to meet you one day and go on stage for you, see your face sand try to make you happy.
After having a good time, I left Jay to his work. Please note that in spite of his busy schedules he still found the time to meet me, answer my questions and pleased the French fans. A big thanks to him for this.
